Photographs of Civil War Musicians

Every band and drum corps in the Civil War looked a little bit different; they played different instruments, wore different styles of uniforms, and varied in the music the played. By studying the photographs of musicians of that period, we can learn a lot about how these bands differed, and if you are a re-enactor you can learn how to make yourself more authentic.

The links to the right take you to several public domain photographs of musicians that we have collected. They are mainly Union photographs and are almost all from the Library of Congress. If you happen to have any more photographs of musicians scanned and in your possession, we would greatly appreciate it if you would e-mail us at photographs@civilwarmusic.net. Thanks, and enjoy the photos.
